revillagigedo. mexico In the Pacific Ocean, south of the Tropic of Cancer and the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, are the small islands of Revillagigedo. The Revillagigedo archipelago consists of three islands: Socorro, San Benedicto, Clarión and an islet called Roca Partida. In 1994 this was declared a biosphere reserve. That is why founding new population centers is no longer allowed. The archipelago has some unique wildlife species giving it biological and ecological importance. Above all it is an exceptional marine area. Being a protected area in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has made possible the proliferation and abundance of species, especially the presence of big schools of pelagic animals.
